RESA SUPPORTS FLINDERS UNIVERSITY YEAR 12 SCIENCE AND MATHS ACADEMY
84 Year 12 students from southern region schools have been getting to grips with their Stage 2 specialist maths, physics or chemistry subjects on Flinders University campus, thanks to a pilot program supported by RESA, giving students preview of university life.
Students participating in the pilot Year 12 Science and Maths Academy at Flinders (SMAF) are being taught via lectures, classes and hands-on projects in the University’s laboratories and learning spaces by teachers competitively selected from the participating schools.
Professor Martin Westwell, Director of the Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century said “Without this program many of the participating students wouldn’t be completing maths, physics or chemistry at stage 2. We’re growing the size of the pie of the potential workforce in science, technology, engineering and maths because so many employers need a slice”.
